I selected this book to become familiar to a geographical area I know little about. Author Sullivan accomplishes this by the telling of the history and his engagement of the Columbia River that borders Washington and Oregon, specifically the dangers of the Columbia Bar. Informed I became. The history gave perspective of the Columbia River over many years, but the author's personal mission to navigate the treacherous waters was what held the narrative. When a book is so all encompassing I had to reach to maintain interest. Nevertheless, learned a lot I didn't know.I selected this book to become familiar to a geographical area I know little about. Allende writes an interesting story combining themes of immigration, Holocaust survival, weaving characters through time and place. The narrative covered characters somewhat shallowly with so many aspects of their lives. Their accounts threaded together without much fanfare. It's like a banquet with so much to offer but each individual dish is not too exciting. Had potential, but....Allende writes an interesting story combining themes of immigration, Holocaust survival, weaving characters through time and place. Perfect mystery sit for those who want an engaging whodunit. Yamashita, a well known screenwriter, takes us to a remote Alaskan town where dismembered body parts appear. Detective Cara, with her own agenda, teams up with JB to attempt to solve the puzzle. Everyone is suspect to the reader. I like the team of characters in this small town where everyone knows everyone and each other's business. They are all connected somehow. Not too dark, not too complicated. A light story with many parts.Perfect mystery sit for those who want an engaging whodunit. Yamashita, a well known screenwriter, takes us to a remote Alaskan town where dismembered body parts appear. Dederer does a thorough take on what is a Monster and the stain carried by, mostly, famous artists. Yes, there is Wagner, Picasso, Allen, etc. How do we separate our emotions from the art? The reader gets to examine the history of male dominance in art where assholes are often rewarded. However, taking into account a plethora of issues to question one’s beliefs, there is also the issue of understanding what created the monster (biology) and to consider one’s own biography. A self-proclaimed Monster, Dederer puts before us the issue of choosing career/art over motherhood. What about the question of whether we can love a monster? No stone is left unturned and I felt ultimately its not a cut and dry issue but has many layers for self-reflection.Dederer does a thorough take on what is a Monster and the stain carried by, mostly, famous artists. It’s a real life story with the backdrop of Clinton, Arkansas in the Ozarks. The main characters are Monica (author) and her longtime friend Darci. The narrative develops in time with the growing up of Monica and Darci and how the effects of the rural ultrareligious, male dominated, working class life seeps in and produces some pretty dismal outcomes. Lack of money or funding, little to no help furthering education, poor sex ed, big stores pulling out of the area, Covid..... The story itself is well told but the amazing detail that leads us to how one can succeed or not despite the lack of opportunities many of us take for granted. It’s a real life story with the backdrop of Clinton, Arkansas in the Ozarks. Author See based this novel on Tan Yunxian, a woman doctor in the Ming dynasty who published a book of her medical cases. The plight of women, especially who are in medical need for female conditions, fill this captivating story. We are also exposed to the male dominated culture of the times with it's strict customs including foot binding, pregnancy protocol and extreme familial expectations. I stopped after reading 50% of the book. Up until that point the story is set with poshy couples that are rich or wanna be. Most are having affairs, in legal trouble, or deceiving themselves or others. Full of naughty people but short on story-line.

A complex story made quite readable. War, organized crime, coupled with survival and human compassion make up this story of resistance and darkness of war.

Wistful throughout, the author tells an account of Kristofer who, at an older age, shutters his restaurant and leaves for Japan to meet and find Miko, whom he had a deep connection with in college. Most of the story works toward finding the reason she left. Think of the years one spends in the education system. Although we may have our own personal experience, Robbins tells us about the present condition of the American public school teachers through three main teachers. We are given a broad and bird’s eye view of what a teacher in different settings may be challenged by – low pay, lack of support especially during covid, bureaucratic restrictions, parent demands, toll on family, etc. Those who haven’t quit remain wholeheartedly committed to the students out of zealous connection to their professional ideals. The examples are numerous and real. We are now bringing social issues into the mix and even expect teachers to put themselves in the line of fire, literally, to protect students from shooters. It’s a taught rubber band that will snap and break the system if we allow this to go on.Think of the years one spends in the education system. Just what I needed - a story that kept me captivated. The main character, despite her obvious and consistent flaws, made you follow her like a close friend. Verghese captivatingly puts together a legacy of family and friends over a 70some year period. If we read just one of the character's plight it would be interesting but putting together many over time and how their lives intertwine makes it a superb saga. He addresses class distinction, politics, marriage, birth and death, and the practice of medicine, of course. The story wasn't overly cataclysmic but maintained my captive attention for 724 pages!Verghese captivatingly puts together a legacy of family and friends over a 70some year period. Kamysh, a Ukrainian writer and Chornobyl junkie, tells of a road less traveled as he foray's multiple times through the Exclusion Zone that is a remnant of the disaster site. I admit it is a different take on the historic event and area destruction, but Kamysh treks as an illegal interloper through abandoned buildings, meeting looters, security guards, and fellow and an occasional drinking buddy. It's an unusual take less desirable than what I usually find interesting about Chornobyl but unique, nevertheless.Kamysh, a Ukrainian writer and Chornobyl junkie, tells of a road less traveled as he foray's multiple times through the Exclusion Zone that is a remnant of the disaster site.
