This book starts when Julia and the rest of the world realize the earth's rotation has suddenly slowed, and will continue to slow. So it could seem like the start of a dystopian novel, but it's not. Instead, it's a coming of age story, complete with first love, family fissures, and the breaking of friendships, all set on the background of elongated days and nights, and society trying to define what is now "normal." This novel explores what might happen in the face of catastrophe: the government might mandate that people follow the 24-hour clock (despite the incredibly long stretches of day and night), some folks might rebel and attempt to live with the new schedule of the sun, but what becomes clear is that humans will always attempt to adapt and continue to live. This is an excellent story that I would categorize as soft science fiction, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a little escapism, or a thought-provoking read.
