I just finished this book and want to recommend it to all my friends. So many books I have read about war focus on the soldiers. We so rarely it seems remember the civilians, whose lives are completely turned on end during an occupation, during a bombing, during invasion. Having travelled recently to northern France, for WWI touring, and Normandy, it occurred to me finally to think about civilians. This book is a wonderful, if fictional, representation of the horror that is war as inflicted upon the locals. We follow the story of brave Emma and the rest of the village as Dday approaches. It is a moving and powerful story, beautifully written, and thought provoking. And as June approached in the story I found myself more and more nervous about the outcome. Who, if any, would survive? And I found myself caring deeply.
