Yes, yes, it's GAME OF THRONES. Whoop-dee-doo. It's the fifth season of this and clearly I'm not entranced anymore. For one, the lighting in this show is awful. Every scene spent in the shadow feels like an eye test. You can't see any of the action in pitch black. But let's put aside that major complaint for a moment. GAME OF THRONES was thrilling one time. It felt life-or-death threatening, the manipulations and calculations involving characters you love to hate and a few cheeky (and rarely) noble ones who you are genuinely affectionate for. Everyone was nearby and the threat felt real, imminent, and meaningful. But as the seasons pass (and winter is still allegedly coming), the cast and map has expanded exponentially to include too much to focus on and not enough time for each point of interest. It's diminishing all interest as a result. Everyone you love is dead and, if they're not, they get a minimum allotment of screentime. That's not to mention the obvious cliffhanger reel. I'm fed up with those last desperate attempts at attention in the last two episodes. We don't know what's up with any of the Starks. And no one can be happy. And no one can be safe. But it all feels kind of sour at this point. You can't feel the sunshine without a little rain, but when it's as torrential as this, there's a point where you figure they're just going to drown.
