I read this on the recommendation of Hailey in Bookland and am so glad I did. Bardugo is on her game at the moment, and I hope she stays there; the world needs more books this good. Kaz, while not the head of his gang, is certainly the brains behind it. He's offered a king's ransom to free a prisoner from an unbreachable prison. He builds a team from a group of young outcasts who each bring something to the table, but also bring plenty of flaws. Like some others have noted, this feels like an Ocean's Eleven or The Usual Suspects, in a fantasy universe. Bardugo has built an extensive world that is the setting for several of her novels. Six of Crows is set in the city of Ketterdam on the island of Kerch, the center of trade for all the countries, where money is king and anything can be had for a price. Built on the bones of 18th century Dutch Republic, the city and country come to life in the hands of Bardugo. When the six set out for Fjerda (which seems to be based on historic Nordic lands), the pace becomes breakneck. I couldn't put it down. Bardugo's ability to create rich characters, rich worlds, realistic dialogue, all while not succumbing to standard tropes is unmatched. I can't recommend this highly enough. I've even gone back and started the Grisha series which was set in the same world, and while highly enjoyable, it's clear that her writing just keeps getting tighter.
