Summary

The Giver begins with Jonas who is 11 years old and lives in a community. He gets scared by the jet overflowing the community which had never happened before. But he thought he was just nervous because of the ceremony of twelves coming up. The ceremony of twelves is where over 12 kids go and choose their career. Jonas lives with his parents and his dad is a nurturer. He brought a baby called Gabriel but Gabriel was going to be released when nobody adopts him by 2 years. Now we have to find the meaning of 'released' through reading. Once, Jonas was playing with an apple and he saw something different. The apple changed into a 'color' red and then turned back to 'no color' again. When Jonas went to the ceremony of twelves, he was excited about the job he would get chosen. But chief elder, the person who called out the names and jobs, skipped his name, and he was nervous and thought it was a mistake. As soon as he knew it wasn't a mistake, he was embarrassed. After everyone got a job, chief elder gave Jonas a very special job, 'The Giver'. He was chosen! Jonas had to get trained by the Giver before Jonas and it was very painful. Jonas finds out what releasing was and he gets really shocked. He was watching a baby getting released with the ex-Giver... The baby laid dead. The ex-Giver told Jonas about someone he loved called Rosemary. She was chosen for the Giver, too, but she couldn't do it. Because it was too painful, she asked for being released herself. After Jonas knew what released truly meant and noticed what was going to happen to Gabriel, he plans to go to the 'ELSEWHERE' with Gabriel. The ex-Giver helped him get ready to go. Jonas got a lot of 'memories' from the ex-Giver and he leaves with Gabriel. He sees a lot of things which he didn't back in the community. Birds, animals.... But the ending is not very clean so Jonas could be dead or he could be alive. I think no one knows except the author.
