Mr. De Lint’s gift for mixing the magical and mundane are given the YA treatment here as two very different girls go through the same troublesome period in their lives—puberty. Change is inevitable no matter what race you are and Elizabeth and T.J. find the road rough surfing when they venture past the comfort and safety of home. The experience proves a growing experience for both of them and the reader is taken along on their individual mystical, terrifying journeys. It’s exhilarating, heart-stopping and amusing to read how both girls negotiate the various bumps in the road—while magic is all around them, both the Big and the Little girl find it tricky to navigate. Mr. De Lint points out, quite adroitly, that pitfalls lie in wait no matter what species you are and that wishes aren’t necessarily all they’re cracked up to be. This book is an admirable addition to any fantasy lover’s library and lovers of Mr. De Lint’s particular brand of it is a potent supplement indeed.
