The New York Times bestselling author of What She Knew returns with an electrifying new novel about how the past will always find us...

"Literary suspense at its finest."--Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Baby

"A wonderfully addictive book with virtuoso plotting and characters - for anyone who loved Girl on the Train, it's a must read."

-- Rosamund Lupton

Zoe Maisey is a seventeen-year-old musical prodigy with a genius IQ. Three years ago, she was involved in a tragic incident that left three classmates dead. She served her time, and now her mother, Maria, is resolved to keep that devastating fact tucked far away from their new beginning, hiding the past even from her new husband and demanding Zoe do the same.

Tonight Zoe is giving a recital that Maria has been planning for months. It needs to be the performance of her life. But instead, by the end of the evening, Maria is dead.

In the aftermath, everyone--police, family, Zoe's former solicitor, and Zoe herself--tries to piece together what happened. But as Zoe knows all too well, the truth is rarely straightforward, and the closer we are to someone, the less we may see.

RATING: 3 STARS
2016; William Morrow Paperbacks/HarperCollins

Here we go again with another "Girl" book. The girl in this case is Zoe Maisey, a music prodigy, and she was perfect, once. One day Zoe is a good girl and the next she is serving time for causing the death of three fellow teens. She is now out and trying to get her life back. Her mother, in a new marriage with a stepson and a child with her new husband, puts Zoe back into music and tries to rebuild their life. At the end of a concert, her mother will be found dead, and Zoe's new life will unravel.

I gave this novel three stars but I am not sure if that is fair. The suspense in this novel is okay, but it tries to drag out secrets even when the reader probably has put it together. I am not sure if the characters are meant to be reserved or unlikable, but I just didn't connect with them. I didn't dislike them, but rather felt nothing invested in them. Usually, when a character is deplorable you can at least hope they get what is coming to them. The ending has been done before and it just left me feeling unsatisfied. I think I gave it a three because the author has potential, I finished the book and I do want to read her earlier book that everyone raves about.

***I received an eARC from EDELWEISS***

The beginning had me hooked and intrigued but by the middle of the book I could guess the ending so it was fairly predictable. Still it was a wonderful read, great characters and good writing.

This was a very interesting read. The characters of the book get to be well known and the reader gets to know about their past throughout the book. The reader gets to not only hear about the past of the main character, but other characters as well and helps build the story of what , why and how something happened. It is a suspenseful mystery where the main character goes through some difficult times and does something to get three people killed. She tries to move on with her life, but with her new family that proves to be difficult when another murder happens.

For fans of a particular perspective "The Perfect Girl" has it all. The female victims. A variety of males ranging from the pathetic loser to the despicable, abusive, financially successful villain. It all ends most satisfyingly when the heroine and her trusty male sidekick, with a little help from a sympathetic female, see to it that the villain gets his just desserts. And if you have to resort to criminal lies to bring that about, it's all the more delicious.

I loved this book. It's not perfect, and my second paragraph contains spoilers, as I discuss the flaws. But it is a well-plotted mystery, with well developed, mostly likable characters.
Spoiler alert -about to discuss important plot points.
A good defense attorney couldhave easily discredited the two hostile witnesses who sent her to prison.
The biological mother was caught in the same trap many women fall into. It's not usually because they are bad mothers or greedy, but frequently is because many women's choices are limited.
The stepfather was written off too easily as a bad, evil man. It's rarely that simple. These men frequently have their own, untreated mental health issues. Which is not to excuse or forgive his actions.
But this is a very widespread problem that is going untreated because so much guilt and shame is attached to EVERYONE in this situation.
This problem needs much, much more attention, and stigmatizing those in this situation doesn't help,

What a sad, depressing book, I didn't want to finish it.

This book fits neatly into the post Gone Girl suburban thriller genre, with plot twists and surprises... At least it's trying for surprise. In truth this book is fairly predictable and would greatly benefit from some editing. My rating for this book would definitely go up if it were 100 pages shorter. It's a fine shallow read, but don't expect to be blown away.
