The second installment in a trilogy of EP's from NIN, Add Violence is truly a textural, cerebral piece of work. The EP opens with one of my favorite NIN tracks of recent memory, "Less Than" - an uptempo, straightforward rocker. Following this is "The Lovers" which is my least favorite track of the record, but contains some interesting percussive elements. "This Isn't The Place" is a haunting and brooding piece that develops slowly and keeps begging for release. A wonderful exercise in tension building. The highlight of the EP for me is the closer, "The Background World". The lyrical narrative of the EP (and the EP trilogy as a whole, thus far) comes to full light with this track. We also see a rare moment in composition from Trent and Atticus where they combine strings and synths. The track finishes in classic NIN style, with an obtuse sequence repeating ad nauseam, distorting more and more into an incoherent mess - tastefully, of course. A great listen, so long as you're willing to sit down and give it your full attention.

Two great songs that make me happy to call them a metal band. Three more songs under the weird almost instrumental-sleepy-eerie songs that I've never enjoyed from NIN, so I split this EP just slightly to the good side of even bad/good.
