At page 68: I don't have the stamina to keep reading.
Author writes very well, descriptive and poetic. It was a pleasure to read about each character's individual story, their feelings, fears and dreams.
But it seemed more like a collection of aimless short stories with no point in sight.

It’s summer. They’re 15-years-olds. And they’re restless. Red Hook, Brooklyn residents June and `Val` decide an evening raft outing is a ticket to fun. How wrong. Sometime later, a teacher and musician Jonathan discovers Val who is unconscious by the water. And she`s alone. A hospital stay and recover time don`t change the distributing facts: June has disappeared and Valerie has no memory of what happened to her. The contemplative novel follows a few in the community impacted by the missing teen including a college-bound young man and witness of the evening named Cree and bodega owner Fadi who writes about missing June in his self-styled community newsletter. The diverse community is placed under a close lens for reactions and responses to the missing person.

I didn't like it too much at the beginning. But with each read page I could start to feel characters more and more like real human beings.

Comparisons have been made to Dennis Lehane for this first novel. It’s set in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a depressed waterfront community. It’s a mystery (two girls venture out on a raft one night and only one returns) but it’s a subtle one and the portrait of a rundown community just managing to get by is convincing and memorable.

This was good, but not outstanding. An interesting set-up and well-developed characters.

I enjoyed this book so much that I am taking the time to rate it. The writing reminds me of a John Steinbeck novel with interesting characters. The story is rich but very relatable to today's issues.

I returned the book today and miss it already.
