Charlize was great, the action was creative and intense, the plot was garbage.

I generally don't like graphic violence. But many movies have some violence. I've turned off shows within a few moments of putting them on to play because it was just gross and all the movie seemed to be about. Some of them were definitely B grade movies.

All I remember about this one is chase scenes and them trying to leave the city.

If there's one thing I learned from this movie is Charlize Theron is one helluva an action star. Plot was alright with spies of many nation trying to retrieve something that every country wants as is always the case in the backdrop of the Berlin Wall coming down. But the fight action stood out with Charlize doing long...very long action scenes. Fights looked realistic. Charlize could definitely take on Xena warrior princess or Wonder Woman.

Checked it out on a whim. It turned out to be a typical Class B movie with a big named star showing a bit of skin while methodically reading a mediocre script and performing fight scenes. Pretty good time waster.

Based on a graphic novel. In other words, a comic book. And everything about the movie -- the characters, story, action scenes -- reflects that level of sophistication.

Rated R, not for kids.
* Film features brutal violence, sexuality/nudity, political situations, Trabants, fierce sarcasm, and awesome 1980s music nobody under 30 would really enjoy.

I saw the Berlin Wall get torn down on live TV. I also have a jigsaw puzzle of that event. Since then I’ve read about the tearing down of the Wall, seen the photos, and heard the aftermath (U2’s Achtung Baby and Zooropa). And, despite the Stasi, never did I imagine that Berliners on either side of the Wall were so stylish.

You know what this film reminds me of?
This film reminds me of Ridley Scott’s [Blade Runner] and to a lesser extent the first [Ghost in the Shell] film (and the Stand Alone Complex TV series).

On one hand, we have a stylish film with spectacular cinematography that refashions familiar ground, Berlin at the end of the Cold War, into a beautiful world of deadly uncertainties.

On the other hand, we have an armed and dangerous female protagonist, with a “very particular set of skills,” whose talents give her no solace, who is continually soul-searching, is employed in a trade where information is life and where is time is measured in seconds, and who lives her life to a great soundtrack.

And if I had another hand, I would add that just like [Blade Runner], both the original and the sequel, [Atomic Blonde] was also criticized for being all flash and no substance…. Ditto [Dr. No]. Just sayin'.

Was [Atomic Blonde] brutally violent?
Yes.

Was that violence integral to the film?
No. It was integral to the style, a gritty, visceral style that was arguably a reaction to the unrealistic, superhero fights that have dominated the box office for the past decade. If all the action scenes were replaced with games of baccarat, each hand more deadly than the last, or an escape via hot air balloon, however, I would still watch this film because of the music, the visuals, and the reveal.

Does the film look spectacular?
Yes! There was some low quality CGI, but that’s more than made up for but the rest of the visuals.

How does the film compare to the source work, [The Coldest City] by Antony Johnston?
I never read it. Couldn’t say.

Were there anachronisms in the film?
Yes, but they don’t really matter.

Was there humour in the film?
Yes.

How was the plot?
Decent. Not perfect. Great ending.

Score and soundtrack?
Excellent. Though, I wouldn’t mind a version only with music by Brian Eno or only with music from David Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy, music that I felt that Tyler Bates’ sparse instrumental score to the film had channelled.

Final Thoughts:
A salute to Charlize Theron, not only as the leading actress, not only for her hard work (including stunt work), but also as the producer of this film over the course of five years of development, according to Variety. True, though the limited budget sometimes showed, Theron only had half the budget for this personal project than that of another celebrity, Ryan Reynold’s [Deadpool].

Stylish films like [Atomic Blonde] that go against the grain can’t all be winners, but they can all hope to be heroes.

From “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie
Put on your red shoes and dance the blues
  Let’s dance
To the song they’re playin’ on the radio
  Let’s sway
While color lights up your face
  Let’s sway
Sway through the crowd to an empty space

Worst spy film ever! The use of contemporary music for long non-dialogue scenes is always a sign that there is no story line or it's weak, which this is, and then some. This probably should have been left as a stand alone graphic novel.

Directed by David Leitch in 2017 based on the 2012 graphic novel "The Coldest City", this American action thriller depicts the activities of a female spy who has to find a list of double agents who are being smuggled into the West on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
Superb and exciting are the choreographed fighting performances of the heroine who really catches my attention.
At first, I wonder who the heck this actress is.
I'm really astounded to get to know that she turns out to be Charlize Theron.
Although I like the fast-paced and action-packed flick, the storyline is overly contrived for the sake of complexity.
In any case, I enjoyed bloody fighting scenes, though I don't like too much violence.

This movie is first off, I felt, a comedy. I mean it sure felt like one, especially with all the outlandish killing scenes and bluffs. Still, it had some interesting elements and the "everyone is a double agent" and "no one knows what this life is like" certainly should lose another star. However, the hot lesbian scenes reward another star. Seriously. That made this movie watchable at times. Plus, one of the best actors is in this movie, the guy from "Split." That guy deserves more credit than people give him credit for; I know he's a "one track" guy like Depp, but it's SO good.

Lorraine Broughton: I've read your file. I've also read your dog file. So let's cut the crap, shall we? This whole hungover, show-up-late, don't-know-which-way-is-up act, I'm not buying it. I trust you about as far as I can throw you.

David Percival: "It's a double pleasure to deceive the deceiver."

Lorraine Broughton: Niccolo Machiavelli. It was on your shelf.

David Percival: Oh my God, I think I f*cking love you!

Lorraine Broughton: That's too bad.

Gone fxcking feral. Berlin is the Wild West. If that bloody wall comes crashing down, we don't want to be under it. If the Russians get that list, we're all buggered sideways.
===

If it'd make you more comfortable, I could stand behind the mirror with everybody else. But it's a little crowded back there.

===
We were just going over your file. I see your Russian is excellent. An expert in escape and evasion. Proficient in intelligence collection and hand-to-hand combat. It's an impressive set of skills. Knowing the Reds as I do, she'll need to use every damn one of them.

You know those movies where the picture just starts to slow down... and melt? Then catch fire?Well... that's Berlin.

You know, I've been in Berlin a long time, and I think I know every doorman of every decent shithouse, borderline decent flophouse both sides of the wall.
