From the author of the New York Times bestelling Natchez Burning Trilogy, and hailed by Dan Brown ( The Da Vinci Code) for his "utterly consuming" suspense fiction, Greg Iles melds forensic detail with penetrating insight into the heart of a killer in a southern town.

Some memories live deep in the soul, indelible and dangerous, waiting to be resurrected.... Forensic expert "Cat" Ferry is suspended from an FBI task force when the world-class odontologist is inexplicably stricken with panic attacks and blackouts while investigating a chain of brutal murders. Returning to her Mississippi hometown, Cat finds herself battling with alcohol, plagued by nightmares, and entangled with a married detective. Then, in her childhood bedroom, some spilled chemicals reveal two bloody footprints...and the trauma of her father's murder years earlier comes flooding back. Facing the secrets of her past, Cat races to connect them to a killer's present-day violence. But what emerges is the frightening possibility that Cat herself has blood on her hands....

Given the current climate associated with the #Metoo movement, this story is timely in spite of the actual time frame. Rocketing from the first chapter, Greg Iles has created a story told through the eyes of Catherine Ferry, an emotionally troubled woman whose been living a life of secrets due to childhood abuse. Like a jigsaw puzzle, a string of murders launches her into discovery, much of it gruesome. And with each element she uncovers, she manages to assemble the critical pieces of the serial murders. Like a snowball growing in size as it careens down a hill, the story comes to an explosive, surprise climax, typical of all books by this author. In the early stages, its easy to draw parallels betweem Dr. Malik and Hannibal Lechter though later on, this changes as does everything else. Having read six other stories by this author, this is yet another top notch page turner, and unique since the narrative is a female. Highly recommended for those who love page turners!

I really enjoyed this book. It was an excellent mix of a serious subject with a thriller, with good character development, good dialogue, and a good pace. The only thing I didn't like is that it had to end
