This was an exceptional story of family devotion, loss, fear and redemption, set in fairly modern times and within a family of witches. An amazing read with sturdy characters and a robust story line.

About a girl who had powers - not for book club

An intense read full of very interesting characters. The book was so well written that I felt like I could totally envision Aunt Isabelle's home and garden, she made her magic come alive. Although there was a lot of heartbreak and tragedy there were such strong bonds between the characters and the story kept me page turning to find out what's happening next.

Just finished this great book! I have never read Practical Magic so I was excited to be able to start with the prequel. It took me about 50 pages until I was fully hooked. I love how sentimental these characters are and loyalty they have for one another. I shed many tears by the end! I loved it.

I loved this book! Magic, love, tragedy, and a delight to read.

I feel like this book had a lot of potential and was very close to being amazing, but it was slightly lacking and definitely moved too slowly.

I love Practical magic.. so I was really excited to read this prequel to story. It was okay.
I enjoyed learning more about the characters and how the curse effected the aunts. but it was a little slow for me in some places.

Loved it! But I love anything she writes. Such a rich family history, connection, and deep abiding love between these characters. Definitely worth a read if you can put your head in the clouds. Dysfunctional and lovely. I’d definitely recommend to friends I think would appreciate the story.

I felt the subject matter of witches and how it was imaginatively used was the strength of this story. I liked the romance element and enjoyed the strength and warmth of the two main women characters.

I got this book from the library, not expecting much but it was one of the best-written books I have ever read! I loved it so much, the plot of the story was very exciting and it made the book very good. A powerful curse began for the Owens family in the 1600's when Maria Owens was accused of witchery and magic for loving the wrong man. Now in the 1960’s, Susanna Owens knows that she must protect her three children from the world. The eldest, Franny has pale skin with blood red hair and can speak to birds. The middle child is Jet who is very beautiful and can read others thoughts. Then there is Vincent who began looking for trouble at an early age. Then when they visit their aunt Isabelle they discover who they truly are and why it has been kept from them. This book was very good and I loved all of the characters. It felt like a long book because it was the story of the Owens over the years, but I think that it was a good length. It is an adult book but I think that it is suitable for teens 14 and older. Rating- 5/5 stars.

"The Rules of Magic" is such a wonderful world to visit. It was magical, enchanting, mysterious, heartbreaking and heartwarming. I was spellbound from the very first line ~ Once upon a time... to the last: Know that the only remedy for love is to love more.
Wonderful story about the power of love, what it forgives and how hard it is to forget.
We learn the history behind the infamous curse that plagues the Owens women and discover the legacy behind the love potions and herbs, and the complicated emotions swirling around Frances and Jet. Most people avoided the Owens family believing any entanglement with them would taint not only their present but their future as well.
It was said that some family members could place a single horse hair into a pan of water and turn it into a snake. The only con about this book was the length, I found the book very long with so much to remember. Rating 4/5 stars.
