In this thrilling sequel to World Fantasy Award finalist Kate Elliott's bestselling young adult debut Court of Fives , a girl immersed in a high-stakes competition holds the fate of a kingdom in her hands.
Jessamy is moving up the ranks of the Fives--the complex athletic contest favored by the lowliest Commoners and the loftiest Patrons in her embattled kingdom. Pitted against far more formidable adversaries, success is Jes's only option, as her prize money is essential to keeping her hidden family alive. She leaps at the change to tour the countryside and face more competitors, but then a fatal attack on her traveling party puts Jes at the center of the war that Lord Kalliarkos--the prince she still loves--is fighting against their country's enemies. With a sinister overlord watching her every move and Kal's life on the line, Jes must now become more than a Fives champion....She must become a warrior.

Poisoned Blade, the second installment of The Court of Fives series, is a fantastical story that carries endless emotion and thrill. To her dismay, Jessamy finds herself trapped in the politics and conspiracies of Efea, a land built on treachery and violence, where relatives have unhesitatingly spilled each other’s blood. The skillful adversary she is, Jessamy must now use her intelligence to make the right decisions in the real game that endangers not only her family, but all of Efea. Similar to the preceding book, the personalities of characters are developed through the actions they take either out of force or free will. The soul of the plot lies in the main conflict between twisted relationships of royal families and thirst for power versus loyalty towards the nation and the resolve to eliminate oppression. The conclusion of the book compels the reader to look for the final installment in the series. In the enthralling and dangerous adventures of Poisoned Blade, readers will not lose interest, even for a moment! 5/5 Stars

The beginning flowed right off of where the first one ended, which was a nice continuation but also a little confusing, as I read the first one a while ago. The characters don't seem to change much; and there is less of Kal as he departs with Jessamy's father to war. Jessamy struggles in balancing her reputation, life, and family all on the dangerous loops of her own game of Fives. Except her adversaries now are the people of the Court, and as she discovers secrets and plots, she finds herself tied in traps that directly correlate to the survival/success of others. Will she make it out a victor, or at least, alive?
