Baby Frankie is born into an unusual family. Her mother is desperate to find someone to take care of her child and she doesn't have much time.

Noel doesn't seem to be the most promising of fathers but despite everything, he could well be Frankie's best hope.

As for Lisa, she is prepared to give up everything for the man she loves; surely he's going to love her back?

And Moira is having none of it. She knows what's right, and has the power to change the course of Frankie's life...but Moira is hiding secrets of her own.

MINDING FRANKIE is a story about unconventional families, relationships which aren't quite what they seem, and the child at the heart of everyone's lives...

This story takes the reader on an interesting journey into human behavior when a community comes together for the common good of an abandoned child.

If you know Maeve Binchy you know she's a superb storyteller who avoids what could so easily drop into soap opera melodrama. This story focuses on a recovering alcoholic who unexpectedly becomes a single father and has to prove his worth, but of course there are at least a dozen secondary plot lines. Her later novels, including this one, bring in characters from previous novels to flesh out the community.

"Newborn baby Frankie's mum is dying of cancer. Her father, Noel, doesn't know she exists and spends most of his days drinking. But when faced with taking custody, he agrees to give it a shot - prompting his neighbors in Dublin's St. Jarlath's Crescent to band together to get him sober and into a decent job (and to provide babysitting duties). With their help, and that of his visiting American cousin and his roommate, Noel fights to improve his situation and keep his daughter, despite the social worker's adamant desire to place Frankie in foster care. Author Maeve Binchy, who died in 2012, was known for well-wrought supporting casts and the small-town feel of the Irish cities they live in - two attributes very much on display here." Loved the cast of characters.

Typical Binchy novel. Lots of characters but I thought it was a bit predictable and drawn out.

Lots of characters and eventful with a dominant theme of decency and that everyone's life is salvageable regardless of the problems encountered. I found the last couple of chapters to be disappointing and somewhat inconsistent with the content to that point.

I love all of Maeve Binchy's books, it is like catching up on old friends. I also like Joanna Trollope who also writes about families and their complicated lives.

Classic Maeve Binchy...keeps you up to finish reading it and gives you a good cry! Characters you love and love to hate.

Better than her last book, by far. A good read, but I agree that there were too many characters.

Pregnant cancer patient contacts the father of her baby to ask him to raise the baby after her death. The story tells about the community that helps him raise the baby. Great story - as all Binchy books are!
