Baking Cakes in Kigaliis a tale in fourteen confections, and behind each cake lies a story. As baker Angel Tungaraza busies herself with her customers' orders, we learn about their lives: Ken Akimoto -- with his penchant for partying, her best client -- and Bosco, his lovesick driver; Dr. Rejoice, without whom she'd never cope with the hot flashes that send her delving into her brassiere for a handkerchief so often these days; Odile, an AIDS worker whose love life Angel has taken a keen interest in; and not forgetting young Leocadie, Modeste, and their baby boy, Beckham. Angel works her magic, solving problems for all around her; and in turn, they help her lay her own demons to rest: perhaps she can finally face the truth about the loss of her own son and daughter, and achieve a sense of peace . . . Hauntingly charming, funny, and involving,Baking Cakes in Kigaliis a novel about the real meaning of reconciliation -- about how, in the aftermath of tragedy, life goes on and people still manage to find reasons to celebrate.

A story with sweetness and nuttiness baked right in. Angel makes the hard years after Rwanda's genocide easier to bear by creating amazing celebratory cakes, which seem to prove that there is still much worth celebrating. But Angel, who listens to everyone else's sorrows, must confront her own.

Loved this book--it reminded me of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency--a slow, sweet pace with a great feel for the culture. Charming, sweet but enough true-life grit to keep it from being saccharine--it's anything but. Would love to hear more about this character.

This story about life in post-genocide Rwanda is both highly informative and wonderfully engaging. The heroine creates fabulous, colourful cakes, counsels friends, matchmakes, and problem-solves—all with intelligence and a light spirit, and while raising her orphaned grandchildren.

Lovely African cake tales woven together like the colorful fabrics these ladies wear. Centered around Angel, who is this artistic cake baker in her part of town, where she is a business woman but tries to keep a balanced life with her grandkids and help those less fortunate while battling some ghosts from her past. Each cake has a story and some of these stories intertwine with one another. Enjoyed.

This novel takes place in Kigali, Rwanda, after the genocide when the survivors and international volunteers are trying to put the country back together again. Angel, who lives with her husband and 5 grandchildren in an apartment complex filled with an assortment of people from all over the world, has a small home business baking cakes for celebrations.
I enjoyed this book. It reads a little like The Number One Ladies Detective Agency series but a bit edgier. It was disappointing that the one Canadian in the story was shown in a bad light.
