Baba Yaga is a witch-like character who flies around on a giant mortar, kidnapping small children. She is a terrifying figure, portrayed not only in literature but also film, animation and music throughout Russian culture. Through the voices of three different narrators, this novel takes the ancient motif of Baba Yaga and weaves it afresh.

The whole may not be more than the sum of its parts but most of them were entertaining. The middle section was most entertainging - reminded me of the beginning of "The Master and Margartita". The listing of all the variations of Baba Yaga at the end was impressively tedious.
