When Anne Elliot turned down Captain Wentworth's proposal of marriage, she allowed herself to be "persuaded" by her snobbish family's conviction of his unworthiness. From that time onwards her life has been governed by duty. But now, after a separation of 8 years, Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth are to meet again and the tables have turned. Her former lover's fortunes have prospered and he is now returned from a career at sea both eligible and affluent. Anne's father, Sir Walter Elliot of Kellynch Hall, has been forced to lease their home and move the family to Bath and a rather smaller abode. What a change of heart the passing of time can bring! For just as Anne now recognizes the false values which persuaded her to reject Captain Wentworth, so she must also accept that this heart now seems set upon the youth and beauty of the impetuous Louisa Musgrove...Originally transmitted in 1971 and starring Ann Firbank and Bryan Marshall, this dramatization of Persuasion conveys all the passions and frustration of Jane Austen's most mature heroine.

Gorgeously shot & well acted, this 2008 version stays close to the book - with all its difficult pauses & important things left unsaid. It seemed perhaps a bit too modern to have the Miss Eliot marathon scene near the end - perhaps this was meant to heighten the drama....

Not a bad story but I was dissapointed Wentworth was v distant and lacked emotion esp at the end with the kiss. He was just standing there waiting to be kissed instead of if he is in love with her as he said to also be engaged and respond. She was more into him than he into her as far as displaying emotions.

I got up to write this review and I'm still waiting for them to kiss at the end. Actually - my husband just said I have to talk him off the ledge....

The sound track is horrible and the story is not great. After seeing Pride and Prejudiced, Emma and Jane Eyre, this is definitely a disappointment.

Lovely, quiet elegance. The tension beneath the sparse dialogue was palpable. Though the "Run Forest, Run" part was a bit ridiculous.

Like most JA fans, I loved BBC's production of P& P (6 hours).... but, if you are a JA fan, you won't be disappointed with Persuasion (only 2 hours!).... maybe another 2 hours would have been nice,,,,but, definitely an enjoyable movie!

The movie was definitely rushed especially towards the end. Somehow Captain Wentworth is able to see Anne, ask about her engagement, leaves takes care of shipping business, leaves a not with a friend then heads back to Anne's home all while Anne is running around town after him. This scene was particularly annoying because she's running all over the place rather than having the scene and explanations carried out in a logical manner. It's a shame because BBC usually does a better job with these films.

After reading the book I was looking forward to seeing this film adaptation. While the costumes and atmosphere were great the story felt rushed. The film was to short. I felt they left out key scenes that would've made this so much better. The acting was good but I couldn't get a sense of the characters, they felt half done. This really should've been at least two hours. I would've even like a two parts, two hours each.

The background and the costumes are excellent. The acting is somewhat less so (stop gazing sadly at the camera!). I also find that the pace of the movie doesn't necessarily match the book and feels very rushed. It could have done with being another 30 minutes longer to allow more time for pacing and character development.

This is the 2007 Masterpiece Theater version (they remade a slew of Jane Austen books). Great costumes, sets, acting, and a slightly younger looking Captain Wentworth! Free, no waiting streaming through NC Live :)

I rather enjoyed this film, the story was engaging and emotional. Like other viewers I expected the story to be longer as it was very much a hurried gloss over. Also, I wonder why the character of Anne was alway staring down the camera, what was the point of that foolishness? it was distracting and silly! Furthermore, even though the character of Anne was a good actress I still believe it was a miscast. Anne did not act as gracefully as I believe her to be . Suprisingly, Captain Wentworth was great though.

Captain Wentworth (voiceover of his letter to Anne, as she runs searching for him): "Miss Elliot, I can bear this no longer. You pierce my soul. I'm half agony, half hope. Unjust I may have been. Weak and resentful I have been -- but never inconstant. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it eight years ago. I have loved none but you. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone I think and plan. Have you not seen this? I can hardly write. I must go, uncertain of my fate. A word... A look, would be enough... Only, tell me that I am... Tell me not that I am too late. That such precious feelings are gone forever..."
