I feel like my review would be different if I read the book first. Before the movie was even over, I was ordering a copy of the book off Amazon (Why doesn't APL carry this book??) so I will find out soon. Despite not reading the book, I can tell this movie was rushed with its plot line. I would have enjoyed more character development for each foster mom. But especially Renee Zellweger's character. I felt like she was in the movie for literally a second; which is sad, I enjoyed her character and the details of her departure from the plot truly upset me.

Overall, lacking knowledge of the book and feeling rushed through the film, I did enjoy the story! I was wishing it was a longer movie, I wouldn't have minded. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next the entire time. Michelle Pfeiffer's character (The mom) is VERY strong and well-acted, but on a personal note, I did not like her mothering choices! I felt very enraged by her behavior toward her daughter at some points. That's how I knew I liked the movie, because it affected me many times.

On it's own merit the movie was lacking in storyline and the development of the phenomical characters created by Janet Fitch.

Having read the book, the movie was very disappointing, and yet, Michelle Pfeiffer nailed the mother's character.

Thumbs down for the film; thumbs up for Michelle.

Good - White Oleander (2002) 109 min. Michelle Pfeiffer as you've never seen her. She plays the matriarchal supporting actress to a teenage girl that has to fend for herself going from foster home to foster home while her mother (Pfeiffer) inundates her daughter with negativity concerning practically everything. Pfeiffer's character would not be on the Best Mother of the Year ballot. Strong performances and good story is worth a watch.
