Really enjoyed this - appealing characters. beautiful scenery. The village where this series is filmed is much smaller than it seems on the show. Yes, there are really yucca plants in the village.

Read the books before watching the first season on DVD. Could be why I didn't enjoy the episodes as much as the books. The Big Freeze made me laugh. A few sad and some scary moments in the other episodes. I liked Robert Carlyle as Hamish but at times it seemed like he really did not want to be playing the part.

M.C. Beaton’s “Death of a Prankster”, written as far back as the mid nineteen eighties, was the novel that reminded me that I’d avidly watched a TV series by the same name back at the turn of the millennium. Hamish Macbeth the DVD is a collection, (I’ll be it, a miniscule one) of six episodes from the series. Made by the BBC, it is characterised by the company’s usual penchant for soft understatement; delightful vistas; and trying accents. Part comedy, part drama this program never failed to amuse me. The perfect antidote to stress.

Hamish Macbeth is a police constable in the small Scottish town of Lochdubh, who occasionally bends the rules when it suits him or when it can help some of his fellow eccentric townsfolk.

Very disappointing. Nothing is like the books with the exception of the name of the main character.

Hamish MacBeth is a series that started great, but faded out over the couple of year that it was made. The first episode was great.

Excellent start to the first season. Although loosely based on the books, you'll come to love the cast of characters! A mix of drama and comedy set in the beautiful highlands of Scotland. Well worth watching.

Great series!!!

In response to an earlier post:
There *ARE* subtitles on the DVDs but they cannot be accessed with a DVD remote because they are encoded the same way subtitles are encoded on a VHS videocassette. This means that the only way they can be turned on or off is with the TV remote.

This seems to be true of a lot of British imports.
