I didn't read the book but great family movie to watch with high life family standards: hard work to earn money learned in a young age, faithfulness to your words, caring and friendship with animals for children etc... and perseverance in believing , never quit on your happiness and dream.

Directed by Lyman Dayton and Sam Pillsbury in 2003 based on the children's book of the same name by Wilson Rawls, this Walt Disney drama depicts the story of a boy and his dogs.
It is a heartwarming and family-oriented fine story.
If you're a dog lover, you're gonna love it.

The book pulled me in and made me feel like I was there with Billy. The movie did not do that for me. Had I not read the book before seeing the movie I would have been disappointed and possibly not discovered the value in this story.

Overall, I love the message of working for the things, in this case dogs, we want so badly. Enjoying the time spent with them and the sadness we feel when they go away. Very good messages for children to learn early in life.

I would recommend watching this movie as a family and then discussing what each person learned from it.

I don't really like dramatic, sad movies, but I love this movie, the acting wasn't great, the book is way better, but in the end I started crying, and most of the time in the end of most sad movies I grimace at their hard efforts to make the audience cry.
