I saw this movie years back and it affected me then. I knew I had to see it again. The best dramas, in my estimation, are those that don't explain everything for the viewer. It's the role of the watcher to fill in the gaps as to why characters do what they do. Samantha Morton is Morvern Callar. The opening scene is a shocker and Movern has to cope with this difficult situation. She is a grocery store worker. She parties with her friend. She finds a way out of her drab life. Some of her actions may be morally questionable. Movern is our heroine despite her faults. The movie is beautifully directed by Lynne Ramsay who understands the plight of the Scottish working class.

Morvern Callar is the name of a lower-class Scottish lass who seems to be a heartless, tragic figure that you might have difficulty making a connection with. The critics liked this film because it very skillfully tells the story of individuals that are lost, seemingly worthless, reprehensible souls. I found it difficult to connect with any characters in this film. Callar is played by actress Samantha Morton, who was basically a UK TV actress when this theatrical release was made. I did not realize that Morton starred in a later film along with Jim Broadbent in the excellent TV film Longford. In that film, Morton and Broadbent won Golden Globes for best actors in a TV film drama. I remember that both blew me away with their acting abilities.

What to do with a dead boyfriend? If you're a proper female, you call the police, and submit his book manuscript for his posthumous glory. If you're a downtrodden, eery young person like Morvern Callar, you clean up the mess, submit his manuscript as your own, and go on a road trip of self-discovery. I might be in the minority here, but the main problem is lack of conflict -- because I don't think she did anything wrong. Dead is dead, and life goes on. The focus is not on the crime, or lack of crime, but Movern's evolution as a person. If you like, it's a girl's Breaking Bad.

Not even Samantha Morton could save this one. Not recommended.

Improbable, confusing, even maddening story, but interesting visual style.
