I LOVE the Nate the Great books for the quirky cast of characters, the direct and pragmatic tone of the narration, and sensible solutions Nate comes up with while trying to solve his cases.

After meeting Marjorie Sharmat this past November, I had a renewed interest in the series. They were books I read with my boys when they were new readers and they are as good as I remembered. This series has a lovable cast of characters including pets. There are humorous exchanges and important cases are solved by Nate in each book. There are also activities included at the end of the book teaching kids about science, cooking and more. Sure to be loved by boys, girls and their adults.

For me, this is the platonic ideal of an early reader. So funny, so well written, so recognizably a take on the phrasing of hard-boiled detectives, which is especially impressive given the confines of writing an early reader.

This story stands up remarkably well given how old it is. Full of rhymes and absurdity, this is fun to read aloud.
