For decades, readers throughout the world have enjoyed the marvelous stories and illustrations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. But few know Geisel's work as a political cartoonist during World War II for the New York daily newspaper PM. In these marvelously trenchant cartoons, Geisel captured the Zeitgeist--especially the attitudes of the New Deal liberals who read PM--with a wonderful Seussian flair. Dr. Seuss Goes to War features handsome, large-format reproductions of more than two hundred of Geisel's cartoons from this time. Book jacket.

This is an interesting look into the early work done by the writer who'd later become internationally famous for his many children's books. His editorial cartoons are often genuinely funny in their lines, punchy in their satire, and amusingly creative in their artwork. In truth, there's a lot that survived into the author's later writings, particularly when books such as the 'Yertle the Turtle' make fun of dictorial leaders.

Still, 'Dr. Seuss Goes to War' has one big flaw that's rather annoying: its disorganization. It flip-flops from text to pictures and back to text again with much in the way of coherency. That said, the book remains fascinating.
